Communing with Nature: Unveiling The Secrets of Tree & Plant Spirit Shamanism
Jun 26, 2025
Have you ever felt a deeper connection to nature? Do you find solace in the whispers of the wind or the vibrant colours of a blooming flower? If so, you may be intrigued by the ancient practice of tree and plant spirit shamanism. This fascinating spiritual approach has been revered for centuries, as a bridge between humans and the spirit world. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of tree and plant spirit shamanism, uncovering its essence and exploring how it can enrich our lives.
What is Tree and Plant Spirit Shamanism?
Before studying this form of shamanism in the Amazon of Peru, I believed in spirits. Still, it wasn't until my first initiation that my entire perception and reality shifted regarding spirits and the spirit realm. I remember the first night I drank the tea of an Amazonian master tree in isolation in my thatch hut. It was night, the jungle alive with energies, and I could feel the presence of spirits drawing closer. These beings were coming from far and wide to my hut. I heard them beating drums in the distance, and the drumbeats grew louder and closer as they approached, I was terrified; there was now a whole tribe of spirits surrounding the hut.
This spirit tribe is known as the Chikuni tribe. They were deeply connected to the plant I was drinking at that time. It was such an unfathomable experience for me to integrate. As I said, I believed in spirits before, but this direct, connective experience was unlike anything I had encountered before. As they drummed, I realized it was a consciousness reaching from the unseen to the seen, to teach, initiate, heal, and interrelate with me. That night began a powerful allyship that has guided me ever since. From that moment onward, I became fascinated by the deep relationships possible with Amazonian plant and tree spirits. This passion has grown stronger with time and expanded to plants and trees from many continents and cultures. It continues to shape my path to this day.
I have studied tree and plant spirit shamanism for over a decade, primarily in the Shipibo-Konibo tradition. This process usually consists of drinking, smoking, or bathing with the bark, roots, leaves, or flowers of different medicinal master teacher trees and plants of the Amazon.
In long periods of isolation, often with no touching, talking, technology, and incorporating strict dietary restrictions, an allyship is formed between the individual and the master tree or plant being studied. This connection can last a lifetime if the relationship is cultivated with sincerity, dedication, and devotion. How one chooses to maintain and strengthen this bond will depend on the individual and the depth of the relationship that was forged in the beginning.
The Shipibo-Konibo tribe of the Peruvian Amazon refers to this process as SAMA, a sacred practice of "dieting" specific plants, trees, and shrubs. It is said that their ancestors undertook the first SAMA nearly 200,000 years ago. This tradition continues today, passed down from generation to generation, honouring their ancestors' wisdom and nature's sciences and technologies.
The Spiritual Essence of Trees and Plants
Long before modern science recognized plant intelligence, indigenous cultures around the world knew what we are only beginning to rediscover, plants are sentient. From the Amazonian tribes working with Ayahuasca to the Druids communing with the wisdom of the oak, every culture has had relationships with the spirits of nature. This process is not a new-age thing; it is simply a remembering process.
At its core, tree and plant spirit shamanism is based on the belief that every living being, including plants and trees, possesses a spirit. Shamans, the intermediaries between the human and spirit realms, tap into the wisdom of these plant spirits to gain insight, heal all facets of human biology, and access the spiritual dimensions beyond our everyday perception.
Many Indigenous traditions, including the Shipibo-Konibo, recognize certain plants and trees as doctors, teachers, and healers. Each master tree and plant carries a unique essence, a personality, a consciousness, and a way of interacting with the world. When one enters an allyship with a particular plant or tree, one begins to learn its language, feel its energy, and develop a relationship of mutual understanding.
For thousands of years, healers have initiated a relationship with a plant or tree spirit to gain an ally in their healing work. Once this connection is forged, the healer can call upon the spirit of the plant or tree to assist in healing members of their community. They work directly in partnership with the consciousness of the plant and tree spirits.
Some initiations into these relationships can be gentle and subtle. In contrast, others can be intense, pushing the receiver to confront deep layers of themselves. Once the bond is established, the plant spirit teaches, heals, and initiates the individual, offering insights and lessons. These relationships are not simply symbolic; they are living, breathing connections extending into the spiritual and physical realms.
For those who feel called to a deeper initiation, plant and tree spirits can guide you through profound rites of passage. Through periods of isolation and devotion, these spirits teach through dreams, singing, visions, ceremony, contemplation and reflection.
Many visionary leaders and creatives use plant spirit allies to unlock new levels of intuitive problem-solving and insight, helping them navigate transitions, manage stress, and enhance decision-making from a place of inner clarity.
How to Initiate a Relationship with Plant Spirits
Suppose you are new to this practice or looking to deepen your relationships with plant allies without undergoing rigorous shamanic initiations. In that case, there are gentle ways to begin. A connection can be cultivated in a way that is both accessible and profound.
One simple approach is incorporating a plant into your mindfulness or meditation practice. This practice can be as easy as making tea with an intentional plant, such as organic ceremonial-grade cacao, rose, or ancient black tea. If you don't already have a practice like this, you can start one with a plant.
Set aside at least 15 minutes daily to sit in a reflective, mindful state. Internally, focus your attention on connecting with the plant's spirit. Set an intention, such as opening communication or simply being present with its energy. You can consciously direct your awareness to the plant's essence, for example, tuning in to the spirit of the rose and inviting its presence into your meditation.
Like any relationship, the more time, effort, and love you put into it, the more you will receive from the connection. Think of it like developing a friendship—if you spent 15 minutes a day in undistracted presence with a person, meeting them with sincerity and humility and without expecting anything in return, a bond would naturally form. The same applies to plant and tree spirits.
Consider keeping a plant journal where you document intuitive impressions, dreams, and synchronicities related to your chosen plant ally. Over time, patterns will emerge, deepening your understanding of how this plant communicates with you.
If you work in a high-stress environment or struggle with emotional regulation, certain plants can be powerful allies in your self-care routine. You don't need to undergo a full shamanic dieta to start receiving their wisdom; simply incorporating them into a daily practice can shift your well-being. Also, a simple ritual before meetings or creative work can help calm the mind and nervous system, bringing clarity and grounded focus.
You can also call on the plant ally to support your workflow, meeting, or high-energy-demand day. As you further into this practice, you can set intentions and ask the plant spirit for specific assistance with your planned activities.

Why Build a Relationship with Plant Spirits?
You may be thinking, why? Why do I need this? What's the point? Well, just as we form friendships with people, where each relationship offers something unique to our life journey, the same applies to plant and tree allyships. Each plant or tree spirit provides something different, some guide, some heal, some protect, but it is up to you to discover what that is. It's a personal journey into the subtle realms of spirit and shamanism; no one else can dictate it for you.
Some plants may assist creativity, heart expansion, nervous system regulation, physical healing, or strength. In my decade of facilitating these processes, I've seen endless possibilities. However, you may miss the point entirely if you enter this relationship with expectations. The true magic of this connection lies in allowing the plant spirit to reveal its gifts to you in its own time, without force or control. And in some cases, they may never be revealed, depending on many factors.
